Drawing Tips
How to Sketch Adele:

  • This close-up image of Adele has high contrast areas of light and dark.
  • Use a sharp hard pencil (H, HB, F) to draw a defined outline around the dark areas of her eye make-up, pupils and her nail tips.
  • Then shade in the area with softer pencils (2B, 4B), building up the tone in layers.
  • See the detail in her eyebrows. To get the defined lines, use the tip of a sharp pencil.
  • Use the tip of a sharpened pencil for her eyelashes.
  • Notice the graduations of the tones on Adele’s right cheek. You can blend these in using a tissue to create a foundation tone, then work pencil into them.
  • See how the highlights in her eyes are not the same positions relative to her pupils.
  • Notice how there is a slight texture to the skin on her eyelids, cheek and lips – test different shading techniques on a different piece of paper to see if you can get the same effect with your pencil.
  • See the section called “Building up Shadows” in our guide on “How to Shade Your Portrait” for help.
