Drawing Tips
Tips on How to Draw Tate Stevens:

  • Before you work on his facial hair, build up the skin tones
  • You’ll need a sharp dark pencil (2B, 4B, 6B) to add the details of his beard
  • To get an accurate look for his beard, you can use a series of short pencils lines – practice these on a separate piece of paper before you apply the technique to your drawing
  • When you are working on his beard, make sure your pencil lines follow the same direction as his facial hair
  • In this image, Tate’s stetson hat  and shirt are very dark
  • In the grid image below, you can see more detail to help you draw the shapes accurately
  • When working on the dark shadows, don’t press too hard with your pencil or you’ll damage your paper
  • Instead you should work up the darker tones by applying one layer on top of  another with soft pencils (2B, 4B, 6B) until you have a dark shade
  • See the section called “Building up Shadows” in our guide on “How to Shade Your Portrait” for help.
