Drawing Tips
Tips on How to Draw Selena Gomez:

  • Notice the highlights on her nose and cheek. You can use your kneaded erase to daub away your pencil shading to lighten these areas.
  • Don’t try to draw every individual strand of hair. Rather shade in the dark areas as a solid and add in the detailed lined textures as you see them in the areas where the light catches of her hair.
  • When shading in Selena’s hair, let your pencil strokes follow the same direction of her curls as they curve to create the illusion of three dimensionality on your page.
  • The lines between to her teeth are very light, be careful not to make them too dark in your drawing if you are trying to get a realistic look.
  • The sheen of her dress on the left creates an interesting texture, see if you can copy it.
  • See the section called “Building up Shadows” in our guide on “How to Shade Your Portrait” for help.

What kind of pencil do you use for the outline? and could you please do Justin Timberlake?

Hi Jade, use a softer pencil for the outline (B or 2B), but remember to press lightly – outlines in a drawing look unnatural. Use light and dark shading to create the edges rather than hard outlines. 🙂

    hey guys !!!!
could you pls tell me which pencil to use for drawing a lighter colored picture ?
    hope you will help,

    Hi Lisi,

The easiest way is to use a soft pencil like a 2B or 4B. Make sure the tip is not too sharp.

Hold the pencil at an angle rather than upright, so that a greater portion of the tip is making contact with the paper.

Then rub softly. It’s always better to build up the tone slowly rather than pressing too hard to begin with.

If you’re new to shading, try different ways of holding the pencil until you find a way that is comfortable for you and practice your shading on a blank sheet of paper until it feels natural.

    Good luck 🙂
