How to Draw Katy Perry

  • Although there isn’t strong contrast on her Katy Perry’s skin in this picture, there are a number of subtle highlight shadows, highlights and mid tones, especially around her eyes and nose
  • To achieve the smooth effect of her skin, shade in the foundations with a soft pencil (2B, 4B)
  • Then blend softly with a tissue or kitchen towel to smooth out the pencils lines and blend the gradations
  • Complete all the foundational tones first before you begin adding the detail for Katy Perry’s eyelashes in your drawing
  • Notice the subtle changes in graduation in the shadow under her chin
  • If you want to get your drawing as accurate as possible to match the reference photo, pay attention to all the small details
  • Notice how some of the edges are blurred and other edges are crisp, for example see the butterfly’s in her hair
  • Use a sharp hard pencil (H, 2H) for the crisp edges, and a softer pencil (B, 2B) combined with blending with a tissue for the softer edges
