Drawing Tips
Tips on How to Draw Jessie J:

  • In this image of Jessie J, she has very well defined cheekbones
  • Build up layers of shadows in your shading then blend softly with a tissue to smooth out the graduations
  • There is a stark contrast between the white areas of her eyes and her dark eye make-up
  • Use a sharp hard pencil (H, 2H) to draw the outlines around the light areas of her eyes
  • Then use a softer pencil (B, 2B) to shade in the dark areas – this will give you a crisp edge
  • In this image, Jessie J’s hair is very dark
  • In the grid image below, you can see more detail to help you get the subtle tones right
  • Don’t press too hard with your pencil when working on the dark shadows because you can damage your paper
  • Rather work up the dark tones by applying one layer on top of another with soft pencils (2B, 4B, 6B) until you have the right intensity of shading
  • See the section called “Building up Shadows” in our guide on “How to Shade Your Portrait” for help.
