Drawing Tips
Tips on How to Draw Harry Styles:

  • Before you begin shading your drawing of Harry Styles, make sure you get the foundation of your drawing as accurate as possible.
  • Spend time on capturing Harry’s features: Pay attention to the size, shape and angle of his face, jaw, forehead, nose, eyes and lips.
  • Don’t get stressed out. Just focus on the contents of one block on your grid at a time, for example when you are drawing Harry’s eyes or lips, see the shapes and sizes in relation to where they lie in the grid blocks.
  • After you have the shapes in place, erase your grid lines and begin shading.
  • Notice the dark, light and mid tones of the image.
  • The darkest areas of your drawing will be in Harry’s hair and coat, especially in the area under his chin and around his jaw line.
  • The darker mid tones are towards the top of the picture in the background. The lighter mid tones are in his face.
  • Compare the light tones in the white areas of his eyes to tip of his nose and his cheeks – these are similar tones.
  • Looking closely at the tones will help you to see where you need to build up tones when you shade in your drawing.
  • Use a softer pencil (2B, 4B) to shade in the mid tones on his face.
  • Very soft pencils (4B, 6B) will be good to build up the very dark areas of your drawing. Remember the secret of shading dark areas is not to press as hard as you can when you shade (this will mark and damage your paper). Instead, build up the tone in a series of layers. See the section called “Building up Shadows” in our guide on “How to Shade Your Portrait” for more help.
  • For the crisp areas of the drawing – like the detail in the eyes, nostrils, comers of his mouth and eyebrows you can use a harder pencil (2H, H). The header pencil will help you to get a crisper more defined outline, the use softer pencils (2B, 4B) to fill in the very dark areas.
