Drawing Tips
Tips on How to Draw Brad Pitt:

  • There are a lot of dark shadows in this portrait. To get the best results when you replicate them in your drawing you’ll need a range of softer pencils. if you don’t have a full box set, you should at least have a 2B, and preferably a 4B and 6B.
  • For best results, the correct method when working with shadows is to build dark areas up slowly with a number of layers placed on top of each other rather than simply ‘coloring in’ as hard as you can.
  • See the section called “Building up Shadows” in our guide on “How to Shade Your Portrait” for help.
  • Pay attention to eyes. The eye on the left is almost in darkness, and the white area of the eye is in fact a medium gray tone. See the very small highlight on the outer left rim of the eye.
  • Study the shadows in the crevices of the right eye compared with the highlights on the right cheek bone. Also notice that the white of the eye on the right is a medium grey and is in fact darker that than the highlight on the cheek bone.
  • When you shade, ensure that the directional marks you make with your pencil mirror the contours of the subject. For instance, see how the edges of the palm of Brad’s hand and his fingers curve. You want your pencil lines to follow those curves as best as possible.
  • To capture the texture of his eyebrows and stubble use the tip of a semi-sharp pencil like an F or B.
  • Notice the subtle traces of reflected light on the left of Brad’s forehead, his left eye lid, the left side of the tip of his nose and the left side of his hand where it is shown in front of his black shirt.
Including this subtle glow of reflected light will help you to achieve a more realistic portrait.
